This project approaches the analysis of the video games Return of the Obra Dinn (Lucas Pope, 2018) and Dredge (Black Salt Games, 2023) from a theoretical-practical perspective, combining the study of the game system through the MDA model (Mechanics, Dynamics and Aesthetics) with a deep exploration of their fictional worlds through the formal, material and dramatic dimensions.
Based on this analysis, redesign proposals are proposed that alter the original experience without breaking its internal coherence: a system of emergent memories and free association of tracks in Obra Dinn , and a non-explicit sanity system that affects the perception of the world in Dredge . These ideas seek to enrich the gaming experience through new forms of interaction, uncertainty and active participation of the player in the construction of meaning.
The work combines critical analysis with conceptual experimentation to imagine new possibilities within the narrative and systemic design of video games.
